Tencent Weibo is a site I log into every single day. With its 140-character limit, it’s perfect for someone like me who loves to talk but isn’t one for long essays. Let me share how I managed to surpass 2,000 followers in just a few days — hopefully it’ll be useful to you!
Imagine being asked to reach 500+ followers in six days. Would you feel lost? Not know where to start? Some might even give up entirely. But it’s actually not that difficult. Today my follower count has surpassed 17,600, far exceeding all my friends. Enough small talk — how did I do it?
First, when I registered my Tencent Weibo account, I filled out virtually every detail as thoroughly as possible, including my avatar and username. I deliberately chose not to use a pretty girl’s photo as my avatar or resort to clickbait tactics, keeping my long-term development in mind. That said, many people do use attractive avatars to draw attention — feel free to try this approach. (Just keep things appropriate, or Tencent might shut you down!)
The first step isn’t particularly difficult — anyone with some knowledge of online promotion understands the importance of authentic personal information for future growth. A few days after I started my Weibo, some friends had already achieved impressive results. Some had already hit 500+, meaning they’d reached our group’s target (600+ followers) in just a few hours. I carefully analyzed their methods and examined each of their followers. That’s when I spotted the pattern — most of their followers had the hashtag #MutualFollowTeam# in their profiles. Let’s think about what kind of people are in these mutual-follow groups. They’re simply people who want to quickly gain more followers and have rallied around a common hashtag. Someone had already identified the target audience. So I started searching for mutual-follow topics and requesting reciprocal follows. The results were genuinely impressive — my follower count rose noticeably in a short time, though not quite as fast as theirs.
Since no one in our circle likes to fall behind, I noticed something: since their followers mostly came from mutual-follow groups, and people who followed them were clearly active users, why not directly follow their followers instead? It turned out to be an excellent strategy, and my follower count shot up quickly, attracting attention in the process. This is how I already exceeded 800+ followers on the first day.
Quick tip: Sharp-eyed readers may notice a catch — Tencent Weibo has a daily limit of 100 follows. But if you use the QQ Zone app to add followers, this restriction doesn’t apply.
I continued using this method until the second day, when my follower count reached 1,300+. At that point, growth became much harder. On one hand, my friends’ followers were almost all already following me. On the other hand, I hit another bottleneck — the following limit. The maximum number of accounts you can follow is 2,000. By then, it was really difficult to grow further. Even if there was growth, it was very slow — after all, just because I follow someone doesn’t mean they’ll follow me back. Having followed 2,000 people and gotten about 1,300 followers in return was already an exceptional ratio.
But there were still ways forward. The earlier approach was just one of many viable methods. Let me share two more strategies that can both get you to 2,000 followers:
The first one sounds simple, but most people won’t necessarily pull it off: Take simple things to the extreme. In the context of Weibo, this means: unfollow everyone who hasn’t followed you back, and continuously add new people.
QQ Groups: Search for “Tencent Weibo” in QQ Groups. This follows the same logic as the mutual-follow approach — we’re constantly discovering potential user groups for effective promotion. What to do after joining the groups should be self-explanatory.
Find the “follow baiters”: Search for “follow bait” on Weibo. You’ll find plenty of people accused of follow-baiting, and you can mine their followers. If people are willing to follow even suspected baiters, they’ll certainly follow someone genuine like us.
Retweets: This is one of Weibo’s most powerful features — information amplification through sharing. During the process, you can even retweet your own content to increase your exposure.
Celebrity retweets: This was a particular advantage for me, since many of my friends have verified Tencent accounts, celebrity blogs, or Weibo verifications. Having friends retweet my content spreads it rapidly and effectively.
By combining these approaches, after 4 days I finally surpassed 2,000+ followers. Many friends asked if I had any special tricks, but it really all came down to execution. No matter how clever the strategy, without the drive to execute, it’s all for nothing. And that’s the fatal weakness in online promotion.
A final thought to leave you with: Have what others lack; excel where others merely participate. Take simple things to the extreme, and you too can succeed.
